Desmond Thio, MD, PhD, MBA
Desmond Thio joined the Apollo Medical Optics team in 2015 and is the Chairman of the company. He was formerly President of Philips Healthcare Greater China, in charge of strategic planning, business development and overall management of Philips Healthcare in Greater China.
Desmond’s past positions include President and COO of Pagoda Pharma Group, China, Country General Manager for Becton Dickinson, China and Hong Kong, General Manager, Oncology, Neonatology for Abbott International, USA, and Senior Director, North America Oncology Marketing, Pfizer/ Pharmacia USA.
Desmond Thio holds a degree in Electrical Engineering and a B.Sc. in Mathematics from Dalhousie University. In 1986 he received his Doctorate in Medicine from Mundial University. He also holds an M.Sc. degree in Preventive Medicine from Ohio State University and an MBA from University of South Australia. He recently received his Ph.D./DBA from University Versailles/INSEEC in Applied Economics with a focus on China’s private healthcare system.
Allen Lin, MBA

Allen joined Taiwan Global Biofund/ YFY Biotech Management Co. in 2007 and brought success to TGB through investment in and incubation of several biotech companies. The most successful of his portfolio companies are Taiwan Liposome Company (4152) and TaiMed Biologics (4147), both of which are IPO companies in Taiwan. He also won a licensing deal from the University of Washington and incubated an IVD company in Taiwan. He now serves as director of business development for this new company (MiCareo, Inc.). MiCareo is focused on the development of rare cell detection platforms, such as sensing circulating tumor cell prognosis and prenatal diagnosis.
He received his MBA degree from National Cheng-Chi University and holds a M.Sc. degree from Chang-Gung University.
Sheng-Lung Huang, PhD
Co-Founder and CTO
Dr. Huang has worked on crystalline fiber based light sources and their application for 20 years. He invented a new method of high speed cellular-resolution optical coherence tomography for clinical use. He has served as the Chairman/Director of the Graduate Institute of Photonics and Optoelectronics, National Taiwan University and Chairman/Director of the Institute of Electro-Optical Engineering, National Sun Yat-Sen University and has been a guest professor at the Abbe School of Photonics, Friedrich-Schiller University of Jena, Germany. He was the Chairman of the IEEE Photonics Society Taipei Chapter and a steering board member of the European Master of Science in Photonics. Dr. Huang served as a Topical Editor of Optics Letters for 6 years and as Guest Editor for Taiwan Photonics Society Quarterly. He was the recipient of a Ministry of Education Outstanding University/Industry Cooperation Award, 1997, and he and his students have together won several awards, including the Chimei Innovation Excellence Award (2010) and the Optical Communications Elite Award (2005). Dr. Huang received his B.Sc. degree from the Department of Electrical Engineering, National Taiwan University, and his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from the Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Maryland, College Park.
David Ma, PhD

David is responsible for establishing and executing corporate systems, business development, international collaboration, and the overall management of AMO. David’s prior positions include Manager of the Biotechnology Incubation Center at Academia Sinica, and Director of Business Development for Medigen Biotechnology Corp. David received his B.Sc. degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Purdue University (West Lafayette), and, in 2009, he obtained a Ph.D. in Developmental Biology from the Division of Biology and Biomedical Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis.
Chih-Wei Lu, PhD
Co-Founder and Director of Research and Development
He is dedicated to the development of biomedical optics, specializing in optical coherence tomography (OCT). He received his Ph.D. from the Graduate Institute of Photonics and Optoelectronics, National Taiwan University and has published more than 50 journal and international conference papers on OCT. He has served in the Biomedical Technology and Device Research Labs (BDL), the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) and the Biomedical Engineer Research and Development Center, National Yang Ming University. He has led several projects on the development of electro-optical medical devices and is familiar with the commercialization of medical devices.
Jason Liang, PhD, JD
Co-Founder and Senior Director of IP and Legal
Chang-Hsing Liang has a technology background in chemistry and life science. Before Dr. Liang joined AMO, he worked for several international law firms focusing on helping start-up companies with their IP strategies development and patent portfolio management.
Director of Regulatory Affairs
Jing Cheng is the Director of Medical Regulatory Affairs for AMO. She has more than fifteen years work experience in the medical device and in-vitro diagnostic device fields, including research, product technical development, product management, project management, quality control, quality assurance, and medical regulation. Jing received her Master’s in medical sciences from Taipei Medical University and is currently a doctoral candidate in Medical Engineering at National Taiwan University.
Sherry Dai, MBA
Director of Finance
Sherry Dai is the Director of Finance for AMO. She has more than twenty years of working experience in high technology industries under semiconductor,solar cell technology, and medical device fields. Sherry served as CFOs of two public companies in Taiwan. Her specialties include setting up finance and accounting systems, corporate internal controls, and the management of investor relationships and human resources. Sherry received her MBA degree from National Taipei University.
